Rogers and Mazza's is one of the first bakeries in the world to make the pepperoni roll — a West Virginia original born in the coal mines and baked fresh every day in Mt. Clare. Here's how it happened.
Born in the coal mines
Italian immigrant miners tucked pepperoni inside sweet bread dough for a hearty, no-refrigeration lunch underground. Rogers and Mazza's has been baking that same roll since the 1950s — one of the first bakeries in the world to do it.
The Rogers and Mazza families
George Rogers has led the bakery as president since 1995, working alongside Dennis, Michael, and John Mazza — all local high school and Fairmont State graduates. A true family business, unchanged in over six decades.
The recipe behind the roll
Our signature sweet dough recipe has been perfected over decades. We use Hormel pepperoni exclusively and bake three varieties — Mozzarella, Hot Pepper Cheese, and Marty's Original — nearly 20,000 rolls a day and still growing.
A West Virginia tradition recognized
The pepperoni roll earned James Beard Foundation recognition in 2018. Rogers and Mazza's has been part of local fundraisers, community events, and more than a few eating contests — this bakery belongs to West Virginia.
